I’ve loved stories as far back as I can remember. Growing up, my caregivers were movies, television, and video games. (No bedtime stories for me, I’m sorry to say.) Maybe I was a lonely kid who escaped into other worlds, but I prefer to think I escaped by bringing other worlds with me.
My love of storytelling only grew. My school library, my home away from home, was a refuge where hundreds, thousands of books could be explored free of charge. At every opportunity, I stole away to lose myself in the pages of whatever book happened to catch my eye. Occasionally, I’d meet someone who shared my growing love of literature. Still, I didn’t think anyone would want to hear what I had to say about writing, let alone read my writing.
I remember the day I got caught reading Michael Crichton’s “Jurassic Park” during my high school algebra teacher's lecture. The book was torn from my hands and thrown clear across the room where it hit the side of a wastepaper basket before falling to the ground in a heap. I was outraged. I knew, even then, that books were to be respected, that their inked pages contain not words but worlds.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I ended up a writer. After earning an undergraduate degree in creative writing from the University of South Florida, I freelanced before landing my current position as a marketing copywriter. Now, I'm pursuing a master's degree in mass communication with a concentration in digital marketing from the University of Florida.
Copywriting is the closest I’ve gotten to being an author, and if that’s as far as I can take my writing career, so be it. (There’s nothing wrong with earning an honest living.) Still, I’ll never be able to live with myself if I don’t try to become a published author.
This site serves as a portfolio of my marketing work. Also, it will chronicle my journey from marketing copywriter to published novelist.
I hope you’ll join me on my journey to find other worlds.
